People Still Use Mobile Phones Whilst Driving
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents is reminding motorists about the risks of making a call or texting at the wheel five years after it became illegal to use a hand-held mobile phone while driving. A new law introduced in Britain on 1st December 2003, banned the use of hand-held phones while driving and also made it an offence to cause or permit another person to do so. But casualty figures show that people are still being needlessly killed and injured in phone-related crashes. There were 25 fatal accidents, 64 serious accidents and 259 slight accidents on Britain's roads last year in which a driver using a mobile phone was recorded as a contributory factor, although these figures almost certainly underestimate the true extent of the problem. Kevin Clinton, RoSPA head of road safety, said: "RoSPA led the campaign to ban the use of mobile phones by drivers and as we reach the law's fifth anniversary, it is important that people do not forget the clear road safety reasons behind it. the full story

The Association of British Drivers: 'Government Speeding Proposal Will Hit Safe Drivers'
Government proposals for a six point fixed penalty for those caught 20mph over the limit will hit safe drivers making normal progress, said the Association of British Drivers. This is because speed limits are being lowered on main roads to levels far below what a reasonable person would see as safe, and it is in these locations that cameras tend to be located - for the simple reason that camera placement guidelines direct them to places where compliance with the limit is poor. "Nobody minds people getting six points for driving past a school at 50mph when the children are milling around," said the ABDs Nigel Humphries. the full story

No Excuses for Being Late For Work This Winter

Two Thirds of Motorists at Risk of Driving Ban From Speeding
Following the announcement that the Government plans to increase fixed penalties for those caught speeding 'excessively', a survey by RoadPilot Ltd has revealed that two thirds of British motorists admit to breaking the speed limit on a regular basis. The study found that the majority of drivers speed because they feel that the limits imposed on UK roads are too low - particularly the 70 miles-per-hour limit in place on dual carriageways and motorways, which 60 per cent of respondents say should be raised. "Given the large number of people who admit to speeding, and the fact that there are over 10,000 speed camera sites in the UK, there are potentially a large number of drivers at risk of losing their license under the new proposals," comments James Flynn OBE, CEO of RoadPilot. the full story

Department for Transport Tackling Speeding, Drink and Drug Drivers
A crackdown on the menace of reckless driving was announced by Road Safety Minister Jim Fitzpatrick today as he unveiled a range of new proposals to tackle drink and drug drivers and other dangers on Britain's roads. A major new road safety consultation sets out plans to help the police better enforce against drug and drink driving, as well as exploring whether there is a need to change the law on drug driving or on the drink drive limit. It also examines the need to toughen penalties and make it easier for police to tackle other forms of reckless driving to cut the toll of nearly 3,000 road deaths a year. Jim Fitzpatrick said: "Britain has one of the best road safety records in the world and the number of people killed or hurt has fallen dramatically in the last decade. the full story

Young Males are More Likely to be Driving Without Insurance or a Liscense
Potentially lethal unlicensed drivers tend to be younger and male, driving up to a staggering 3. 7 million hours a month according to a report published this week in the latest edition of Advanced Driving, the IAM members' magazine. Neil Greig, IAM Motoring Trust Director, said that a new ten point plan is needed to prepare young people to drive safely on their own or with passengers after their test. "We don't want to demonise young drivers, but research shows that uninsured drivers are typically young males living in urban areas - 60 per cent of those convicted of uninsured driving are under 25, and half are under 20," said Mr Greig, writing in the newly revamped IAM magazine. "These drivers have a high risk of crashing and there is a perception among their peers that they can ‘get away with it'. the full story

Emissions Based Road Tax Changes for Older Cars Expected
A likely postponement of road tax increases for cars bought before 2006 has been welcomed by the Environmental Transport Association (ETA). Changes announced in the last Budget meant that from 2009, all cars that had been on the road since 2001 would face rises in Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), but it now appears likely that next week's Pre-Budget Report will announce that the retrospective emissions-based tax will be postponed. Director at the ETA, Andrew Davis said: “Higher-polluting cars should face some form of punitive taxation, but it is vital that green taxes are seen as well thought through and fair it's questionable whether such a sharply-increased retrospective tax will ever be seen in that way. ”The VED changes would have affected almost 70 per cent of Britain's 26 million drivers, but it was the retrospective aspect of the tax that most infuriated MPs of all parties. the full story
